After Florida, the monumental exhibition "Machu Picchu and the Treasures of Peru" will be set up in Paris, at the Cité de l’architecture & du patrimoine. This is a unique opportunity to explore over three thousand years of history, from the origins of pre-Columbian civilizations to the Incas.
Do you dream of visiting Peru?
Beyond the traditional exhibition of remarkable archaeological objects, the exhibition "Machu Picchu and the Treasures of Peru" offers a truly immersive experience into the world of ancient Peruvian societies that shaped the grand history of Andean civilization. In line with the desire to create emotions and meaning, the exhibition presents innovative solutions for better displaying and communicating the tangible and intangible heritage that Peru and its museums preserve. Augmented reality, which integrates digital visual and audible content (texts, images, videos, animated 3D objects), allows for the combination of virtual and real objects, enhancing the narrative discourse; while virtual reality literally transports visitors into the monumental environment of Machu Picchu.
From the discovery of Machu Picchu to the treasures of ancient Peru.
Conceived and produced by World Heritage Exhibitions, Cityneon Holdings and the Museo Larco of Lima, with the participation of the Chávez Ballón Museum of Machu Picchu, the Inkaterra Association, and support from the Ministry of Culture of Peru, this large-scale exhibition highlights the achievements of ancient Peruvian civilizations through a carefully selected collection of 192 creations spanning 3,000 years of civilization. Beyond their beauty, the journey connecting the selected objects showcases, for the first time through immersive technologies, the beliefs and rituals of the Andean world that have shaped Peru's millennial history.
The exhibition will highlight representations of deities, mythological beings, and sacred narratives materialized through remarkable archaeological pieces, some of which will be displayed to the public for the first time. Surprising realistic ceramics, sumptuous textiles, luxurious tableware, and goldsmiths' jewelry—renowned in Peru since its conquest in the 16th century—reveal the fascinating world of ancient Peruvian civilizations.
A unique opportunity to visit Machu Picchu.
Through immersive staging, the exhibition promises a journey through time with the world's first virtual visit to Machu Picchu. This unique experience allows the public to explore Machu Picchu and feel the magnificence of this exceptional site set in a stunning natural environment, where the original biodiversity is now preserved thanks to a recent reforestation initiative.
From the flourishing landscape of Machu Picchu to the coastal desert and the Andean highlands, the visit is guided by Ai Apaec, a mythological civilizing hero who confronts the challenges posed by Nature and brings teachings and the hope of perpetual regeneration to his people. Interactive tools, large-scale video projections, and immersive soundscapes enhance the experience.
A unique VR experience
With its immersive experience "Machu Picchu and the Spirit of the Condor," the exhibition aims to virtually introduce this exceptional UNESCO World Heritage site to all those who dream of visiting Machu Picchu in Peru.
This first virtual visit to Machu Picchu utilizes VR motion chairs equipped with high-end multi-sensory stimulation features, VR headsets (6-DOF), and scent diffusers. In an environment of unlimited 360-degree movement, visitors can travel to Peru to see, hear, smell, and even soar over the mysterious city from the sky.
“Alone in the Inca citadel, the viewer will discover some of its most iconic spaces, from the Temple of the Sun to the heights of Huayna Picchu. They will experience the natural environment of Machu Picchu like never before, with breathtaking views perched at 2,430 meters above sea level in the heart of a tropical forest. The animated cinematic chairs help bring the experience to life, complete with a thunderstorm and even an earthquake... This virtual experience is strikingly realistic and offers a more intimate and extraordinary perspective of the archaeological site, even for those who have had the privilege of visiting Machu Picchu in Peru!” said Carole Fraresso, co-curator of the exhibition.
Draw inspiration from a cosmovision in harmony with the Living
Peru boasts an extraordinary ecological variety due to its diverse climates and the presence of the Amazon rainforest, making it one of the top five biodiversity hotspots in the world. This biodiversity is fundamental to understanding the social and political organization of Peruvian civilizations and is also inseparable from Andean cosmovision.
Deeply rooted in current events, the exhibition reminds us how human life unfolds in a constant quest for balance in a world often marked by imbalances, such as those caused by devastating natural disasters.
"Inspiring, the exhibition reminds us that Nature was not merely a commodifiable resource but the very matrix of all life. Pachamama symbolizes this 'Mother Earth' ecosystem that nurtures, sustains, shelters, and preserves life. Even today, she influences the beliefs of Andean peoples, who devote themselves to her and collectively engage in rites and worship for this sacred entity; in return, she grants humanity a good life on this earth."
Meet the Ancestors of the Golden Kingdoms
Finally, 90 precious objects and jewels from royal tombs complete the story of this 'golden civilization,' which represents one of the richest cultural legacies in the world. In the intimacy of an audience hall, the exhibition brings to life, for the first time, a selection of adornments that once belonged to noble pre-Incan lords. Each piece illustrates the virtuosity and ingenuity of the artisans, reflecting the original craftsmanship of the goldsmiths of ancient Peru. Among the most remarkable examples of this expertise is the magnificent golden funerary trousseau of a Chimu emperor dating from the imperial period (1300 AD), considered unique in the world. Through this masterful collection, the public is offered a grand encounter with the dazzling figure of the ancestor, once honored for his wisdom and virtues.
